Help Hugh buy his House!

March 2008 - I am sure everybody knows the US is in a recession of some sort right now and the housing market is in a serious slump. Well, I personally am trying to do my part to help the economy by, yes, buying a "new" house! The problem is that we plan on keeping and living in our current house until next year, and fix up the very nice but somewhat antiquated house where we have just signed a sales contract. We actually do have enough assets in stocks to sell for the down payment and pull this off, but our household may indeed experience a slight "cash flow" bind until we sell our current house next Spring. I could sell a larger portion of our stock and fund portfolio to help us out, but it has already taken a huge hit in the last few months so I do not particularly want to do it!

So now I am putting up this page as an experiment to see if anybody is willing to send me anything to help me get through the temporary cash bind until we sell next year, or if I will be forced to sell off more of my assets at depleted values to modernize our future home and pay the monthly bills. Hey, I am going to be helping out the hardware and paint stores in the St. Louis area as well as local contractors (who definitely need the work right now) to take a very well built, 50+ year old home and save it from just being another "teardown", but instead update it be a worthy home for a modern family. It is in a great location in a fabulous school district, it just needs some serious updating. My wife and I (and hopefully also our children!) are personally going to be ripping out the outdated carpeting and wallpaper ourselves and doing much of the work, but we will outsource some of the trickier stuff (refinishing wood floors, tile work, brick work, hanging cabinets, some plumbing) to talented local tradespeople.
